According to multiple sources Mississippi Valley State has offered their head football coaching duties over to former Jackson State coach Rick Comegy. Despite the reports, MVSU said Sunday that it “has not selected a final candidate”, according to the Clarion-Ledger.
This move would be a plus for Comegy and MVSU. Comegy would still be under Mississippi’s public retirement system and have the ability to continue recruiting the state of Mississippi. He’s already familiar with the SWAC East and will have the opportunity to avenge his former employer on an annual basis.
Then there is Valley State: A program that will secure a proven winner in Comegy and would likely entice their fan base. With fans interested again, a much needed boost in revenue streams is likely to follow.
The Valley has never won a conference title in football. And after coming off a disappointing 8-35, four year campaign under former coach Karl Morgan, Comegy brings a championship pedigree and tons of experience compiled with a winning attitude.
The last time MVSU had this much buzz around their football program was when the legendary Archie “Gunslinger” Cooley implemented his pass happy “Satellite Express” offense, featuring NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice and SWAC Hall of Famer Willie Totten.
Only time will tell if this match will be made official, but giving enough time and financial commitment, Comegy may have the entire conference looking right down the barrel of the Devil’s Gun.
It should be quite interesting in the Mississippi Delta when the Devils take the field for the 2014 fall season. I can see more recruits going to the school because of Coach Comegy’s presence. He is a great recruiter. They have not had a coach of this caliber at the school since Archie “Gunslinger” Cooley was the coach in the 1980s.
J State’s lost is MVSU’s gain. It is amazing that they named the head football coach and head band director at the same time.
