Alabama State is bringing a basketball legend to its program.
The school announced Tuesday night that NBA Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins has been named general manager of the men’s basketball program. The university revealed the move during its annual Basketball Tipoff Reception, adding one of the NBA’s most recognizable figures to its athletics operation.
Wilkins’ arrival comes as college basketball programs navigate a rapidly changing landscape shaped by NIL opportunities, revenue sharing and the transfer portal. Alabama State is looking to use his experience and connections to help the Hornets compete in that environment.
In his new role, Wilkins will work with university athletics administrators and the coaching staff on fundraising, donor relations, NIL partnerships, revenue sharing, roster management and player development.
“Wilkins’ impact extends well beyond his Hall of Fame playing career,” Alabama State Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Jason Cable said in a statement. “After leaving the court, he built an equally distinguished career as a professional, and he embodies the very attributes we hope our student-athletes will carry with them: excellence, integrity, and a commitment to others.”

For Wilkins, the appointment represents a new challenge and an opportunity to help build on the Hornets’ progress.
“To be at a place like Alabama State University is exciting; it’s a new challenge,” Wilkins said. “The programs are trending upward, so it’s an exciting time to join them and accelerate the growth.”
Why Dominique Wilkins matters for Alabama State
Wilkins brings more than a Hall of Fame résumé to Montgomery. His national profile and relationships across the basketball world could help Alabama State strengthen its fundraising efforts, develop partnerships and create additional opportunities for its student-athletes.
Those resources are increasingly important as schools look for ways to manage rosters, retain talent and compete for players in the transfer portal era.
Wilkins is best known for his spectacular NBA career with the Atlanta Hawks, where his high-flying style and scoring ability earned him the nickname “The Human Highlight Film.”
Now, Wilkins will look to make an impact away from the NBA spotlight, helping Alabama State strengthen its basketball operation as the Hornets pursue greater success on and off the court.
