The MEAC and Commissioner Sonja Stills will be working together to raise the conference’s profile for another five years.
Tuesday afternoon, the conference announced that Stills has agreed to a contract extension through 2031, ensuring stability as the MEAC looks to continue as an important part of HBCU athletics.
“Commissioner Stills has been a steadfast advocate for our student-athletes, championing excellence not only in competition but also in academics, leadership, and personal development,” Norfolk State president Dr. Javaune Adams-Gaston said in a statement released by the MEAC. “Her collaborative approach, strategic vision, and dedication to elevating the MEAC have strengthened our conference and reinforced its proud tradition of excellence. We are grateful for her partnership and look forward to continuing our work together to create transformative opportunities for our students, enhance the national profile of the MEAC, and build on the conference’s remarkable legacy.”

Stills replaced Dennis Thomas following his retirement and has led the addition of women’s flag football and women’s golf as championship sports, negotiated new media rights deals with ESPN and has collaborated with her colleagues – SWAC commissioner Dr. Charles McClelland, SIAC commissioner Anthony Holloman and CIAA Commissioner Dr. Jacqie McWilliams-Parker – to advocated for preserving college athletics in light of the House vs. NCAA settlement.
