Former HBCU football player turned coach in ICU after cardiac arrest

Darius “DJ” Jones, a respected coach, mentor, and community leader with deep ties to Charlotte, is fighting for his life after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest, according to his family.

Jones, 35, who is an assistant football coach at Hough High School in Charlotte, remains in intensive care on ECMO support for both his heart and lungs.

A GoFundMe account to help cover Jones’ medical bills has been created.

His survival thus far has been credited to the quick actions of his significant other, who performed CPR before emergency responders arrived, along with the ongoing efforts of his medical team, according to The Charlotte Observer.

The medical emergency that occurred on May 24 comes amid a series of personal hardships for Jones and his family. In March, his young son, Drex, was seriously injured after being struck by a driver who failed to stop for a school bus. Just weeks later, Jones experienced the loss of his father.

Despite those challenges, family members say Jones continued to serve others, maintaining his role as a mentor and leader in the community.

DJ Jones was committed to young people

Known for his impact on and off the field, Jones has spent years developing young athletes and guiding them toward opportunities in college athletics, professional sports, and career success, the GoFundMe post said.

His work has made him a respected figure throughout the football community and beyond.

Jones, who played football at Johnson C. Smith, is recognized for his commitment to leadership, mentorship, and service. Friends and colleagues describe him as dependable and compassionate, someone who consistently supported others in times of need, the post said.

Now, his family is asking for that same support in return.

As Jones continues his recovery, his family faces mounting emotional and financial challenges. His significant other remains by his side while also caring for their son and managing daily responsibilities. Medical professionals anticipate that Jones’ recovery could require extensive rehabilitation, long-term cardiac care, and potentially a heart transplant.

The family is asking for prayers, financial contributions, and community support to help cover medical expenses, travel, childcare, and lost income during this difficult time.

“We’re asking everyone to keep DJ in their prayers,” the family shared. “For strength, healing, and hope.”

The family is seeking to raise $28,000, of which $16,877 has been donated as of Wednesday.
