Jackson State sophomore quarterback Jared Lockhart has spent his post-spring practice time trying to master another sport.
Lockhart, Tigers starter under center when the 2026 football season begins, participated in the javelin for the SWAC champion JSU outdoor track & field team this past week. How well did Lockhart perform? He finished fourth overall in the men’s event with a throw of 59.19 meters, which led to five team points for the Tigers. It was his second javelin event of the season. He previously recorded a throw of 51.68 meters to finish third at the Maroon and White Tune-Up at Mississippi State in April.

Jared Lockhart was a champion as a youth, too
Lockhart’s success in javelin builds on a strong track and field background. As a youth competitor, he placed third in the 15-16 boys division at the 2022 AAU Junior Olympics after winning the 12-year-old division in 2019. He also earned a third-place finish at the 2022 adidas Outdoor Nationals. Lockhart, a native of Charlotte, North Carolina, was also an 8-U national champion in the javelin throw and even won the AAU shot put national championship in 2016. Lockhart will now look to improve on a freshman football season where he was named SWAC Co-Freshman of the Year after going 5-0 as a starter and passing for 1,031 yards to go along with seven touchdowns.
