Both the Howard men’s and women’s basketball teams were stunned by Maryland Eastern Shore last month in close losses at the Hawks’ home gym.

The Bison made sure there was no doubt at Burr Gymnasium as the women won 66-45 and the men took home a 79-53 win.

The Howard women now lead Norfolk State by a full game and UMES by two in the MEAC basketball standings.

After a Kalise Hill steal and basket to the tie the game at 19 late in the first quarter, Howard led the rest of the way, highlighted by a 25-7 third quarter advantage that gave them a 52-28 lead going into the fourth.

Don’t look now, but Howard is back on top of the MEAC. The Bison were working on all cylinders in a 66-45 take-down of Maryland Eastern Shore.

Sophomore guard April Edwards led the Bison (19-7 overall, 9-1 MEAC) with a game-high 15 points. Zoe Stewart and Zennia Thomas joined Edwards in double figures with 14 and 10 points respectively.

Lainey Allen scored 12 points to lead UMES (14-13 overall), who has lost two MEAC games in a row to fall into third place at 7-3.

The men’s game featured more of the same as Howard (16-10 overall, 6-3 MEAC) overcame a brief 4-3 deficit to lead by as many as 16 (41-25) in the first half after a Travelle Bryson putback and free throw.

The Bison put the game away with a 16-5 run to start the second half and opened a 77-47 lead on a Cedric Taylor III basket with three minutes remaining in the game.

Taylor, a transfer from Morehouse College, led Howard with 22 points, while Bryce Harris and Bryson contributed 17 and 16 points respectively.

UMES (8-18) has lost five MEAC games in a row after a 4-0 start. They were led by Trey Brown with 14 points.
