Thursday night was a long time coming for one HBCU women’s basketball team – two months long.
Delaware State snapped a 12-game losing streak with their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win, a convincing 67-47 win over host South Carolina State.
The win is the Hornets’ first triumph overall since an 83-38 win over Division III St. Mary’s College (MD) Nov. 22.
East Texas A&M transfer Nykesha Sanders had a breakout game, connecting on five of seven three-point attempts for a team-high 17 points. Freshman guard Amya Scott and sophomore forward Ericka Huggins contributed and 11 and 10 points respectively to the Hornets’ point total.
DSU (4-16 overall, 1-4 MEAC) trailed 2-0 after a Shaunice Reed jumper, but baskets by Liliana Harrison and Huggins gave the Hornets the lead for the remainder of the game.
DelState led 28-23 at halftime, then outscored South Carolina State 20-9 in the third quarter. The Hornet hot streak continued as Jermeisha Frierson knocked down a three, Harrison converted a layup and free throw, and a pair of Huggins foul shots gave DSU their largest lead at 56-34.
Reed led the Bulldogs (5-15 overall, 2-3 MEAC) and all scorers with 20 points.
