It was all just a formality as Florida A&M officially named Quinn Gray head coach.
The Florida A&M University Board of Trustees on Tuesday quickly approved the hiring of Gray as the school’s 20th head football coach, bringing the former FAMU quarterback back to his alma mater after a successful tenure at Albany State University.
“I’m home. I am humbled and excited about the opportunity to lead this great program that is known to be the standard in HBCU football,” Gray said in a statement released by the university.
FAMU President Marva B. Johnson, J.D., said Gray’s experience as a player and coach made him a strong fit to lead the program. “Coach Gray’s journey—as a record-setting student-athlete, an NFL veteran, and a successful head coach—uniquely positions him to lead in today’s highly competitive collegiate athletics environment,” Johnson said in a university statement.
Gray spent three seasons as head coach at Albany State, compiling a 24–11 overall record and a 20–4 mark in SIAC conference play. In 2025, he guided the Golden Rams to a 12–2 record, an undefeated 8–0 conference season, and a berth in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals.
Gray and the university agreed to a 5-year, $1.4 million contract.He will receive a $25,000 signing bonus and a base salary that escalates from $240,000 in his first year to $320,000 in year five, averaging $280,000 annually over the life of the deal.
A former standout quarterback for the Rattlers, Gray went on to play in the NFL before moving into coaching. His hiring marks a return to the program where his football career began. He now will attempt to lead FAMU back to prominence after the program went 12-12 over two seasons under former coach James Colzie, who was fired earlier this month.
