Florida A&M had reportedly identified the school’s next football coach.

Days after firing James Colzie as head football coach, Football Scoop reports that the Rattlers have targeted former quarterback and current Albany State head coach Quinn Gray as their new leader.

Gray, 46, starred at quarterback for FAMU from 1998 to 2001, leading the Rattlers to the FCS national semifinals in 1999.

He then played seven seasons for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Kansas City Chiefs. His most extensive time came in 2007, where he started eight games for Jacksonville, completing 80 of 144 passes for 986 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Gray began his coaching career at Lincoln High School in Tallahassee before becoming Alcorn State’s quarterbacks coach under Fred McNair. He was hired to lead the Golden Rams in 2023. Albany State won the SIAC championship this past season and advanced to the NCAA Division II quarterfinals, where they lost a 31-24 heartbreaker to Newberry (SC).

Colzie was fired Tuesday following a 12-12 record in two seasons, including back-to-back losses to Bethune-Cookman in the Florida Classic and Mississippi Valley State to close the 2025 season.

According to Football Scoop, Gray also interviewed for the Hampton vacancy before deciding on a return to Tallahassee. The Pirates are searching for a new football coach after dismissing Trenton Boykin last month.
