Jackson State quarterback JaCobian Morgan has proven that leadership reaches far beyond the playing field.
Morgan has assumed an influential role as a mentor to back up Jared Lockhart, highlighting the intangible value the injured star continues to bring to the Tigers’ program.
“He’s the unquestioned leader of our team, one of the unquestioned leaders on this roster,” head coach T.C. Taylor said on Monday about the injured quarterback. “He showed his value as a player, but now you see what he means to this football team.”
Morgan was sidelined after suffering a leg injury during Jackson State’s recent loss to Grambling State in Las Vegas. His current outlook for return is unknown. Despite being unable to play, Morgan has maintained an on-field presence that has been vital to his teammates’ confidence and performance, including last Saturday at Florida A&M.

“He did a good job giving Jared [Lockhart] some comfort throughout the whole deal, through those four quarters of that last game,” Taylor added.
Taylor emphasized Morgan’s mentoring role, which includes quietly breaking down film and game strategies with the true freshman back now thrust in the starter role.
“You look over there, he’s got the iPad breaking down looks and keeping Jared grounded. Letting him know, ‘I’m right here with my brother through this whole process.’ It was a great job by him, and that’s what you’re going to continue to see.”
Morgan’s leadership extends beyond the quarterback room; his influence shapes the entire team’s mindset.
Demonstrating his commitment to the team’s success, Morgan even roomed with Lockhart during their recent road game to provide further support and encouragement.

Jackson State responded to Morgan’s absence with a powerful ground game and strong team effort, securing a 41-16 victory over Florida A&M. Lockhart went 5 of 10 for 104 yards and a TD pass.
Still, Morgan’s steady presence as a mentor and motivator remains an essential part of the Tigers’ competitive spirit as they pursue SWAC success this season.
“This football team looks at him as our unquestioned leader,” Taylor said.
