Prairie View head coach Tremaine Jackson got an up close and personal feel for the Labor Classic rivalry in his first game as Panthers head coach.
And thanks to the play of quarterback Cameron Peters, Jackson achieved his first win as PVAMU head coach.
Peters fired a 17-yard touchdown pass to Rodney Ojo as time expired to lift Prairie View over Texas Southern 22-21 in the annual Labor Day Classic.
The dramatic victory now gives Prairie View (1-0 overall, 1-0 SWAC West) a 7-0 record at Shell Energy Stadium in Houston.
The game was delayed more than hour thanks to weather, starting at 8:20 pm local time. Both teams didn’t seem affected early on as both offenses were clicking.
KJ Cooper scored on a 10-yard QB keeper to give the Tigers (0-1, 0-1 SWAC West) a 7-0 lead. Peters countered with a 25-yard touchdown pass to tight end Kheagian Heckaman to tie the game at 7 after one. Brandon Campbell gave the Panthers a 14-7 lead with a 5-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, but Kerien Charlo’s 76-yard return of the next kickoff gave Texas Southern a short field.
Athean Renfro scored from 20 yards out to tie the game at 14, which would be the score until the 4th quarter.
Panthers defensive tackle Malik Mason snared Da’Veon Ford in the Tiger end zone for a safety and a 16-14 PVAMU lead with 9:49 to go in the fourth quarter.
Both teams traded empty possessions until Cooper connected with Roriyon Richardson from 15 yards out with 1:16 remaining.
Peters then quickly took Prairie View down the field and despite an offensive pass interference penalty the previous play, found Ojo with a back shoulder throw in the middle of the end zone with all zeroes on the clock.
