There is a buzz around Jackson State football camp about Shemar Savage.
The talented receiver, who transferred in from Prairie View A&M, is quickly emerging as one of the team’s most promising new faces—and expectations are soaring.
“We needed another big receiver here,” said JSU coach T.C. Taylor when asked about Savage’s arrival. “Shamar is one of the new faces that we’re excited about. Transfer from Prairie View. He’s been lights out.”
Savage, currently slotted at the Z receiver position, has wasted no time making an impression, said Taylor. Yet, his versatility means mismatches across the field.
“He’s been lights out playing the Z receiver for us right now, but we’re able to move him around some other positions,” Taylor explained. “He’s bought into the culture.”
Savage’s on-field prowess isn’t the only thing drawing attention—he’s also adapted quickly to the team’s close-knit environment.
“You know, him and (Jackson State quarterback) Jacobian (Morgan) have a great relationship throwing and catching with each other, so we’re excited about him,” said Taylor.
At 6’4″ and with a physical presence reminiscent of last season’s standout receiver, Joanes Fertilien, Savage brings the kind of skill set Jackson State fans are accustomed to.
“He’s a guy that has NFL potential as well,” said Taylor. “You know, big body receiver, something that we’re accustomed to here at Jackson State. If you saw how Joanes Fertilien play for us last year, Shemar Savage is bringing those same type of things to the table.”
With camp rolling and Savage already turning heads, the anticipation for his debut is building rapidly in Jackson. If his performance so far is any indicator, fans might soon witness the rise of the Tigers’ next great receiver.
