Despite an influx of optimism following DeSean Jackson’s high-profile appointment as head football coach, Delaware State was projected to finish at the bottom of the MEAC.
The Hornets were picked to place sixth, behind Norfolk State, whose coaching staff now features NFL legend Michael Vick.
Jackson addressed the media following the poll’s release, stating the prediction does not bother him.
“That doesn’t bother me,” Jackson said during a MEAC Media Day interview on Tuesday. “I know the work we’re putting in. I love the underdog. I’ve been an underdog my whole life, and I’ve been successful my whole life.”
He pointed to Delaware State’s recent struggles—just two wins and 22 losses over the last two seasons—as justification for the team’s current standing, but remained firm: “I’m good at the bottom right now, but I guarantee we ain’t gonna stay there.”

The Hornets have not had a winning season in 12 years or won a MEAC title since 2007. The team underwent significant changes in the offseason, with head coach Lee Hull’s departure after two poor seasons.
“We want to be at the Celebration Bowl this year,” he said. “We want to win the MEAC this year. Whatever was going on, we can’t do that anymore.”
Despite modest external expectations, Jackson says he is committed to transforming the Delaware State football program.
