After departing from Douglas Whittler, ending a 16-year tenure, Morehouse has named a successor.

Longtime Power Four assistant coach Larry Dixon will be tasked with taking over the Maroon Tigers in his first head coaching role.

“I’m honored, humbled, and excited to join Morehouse College and lead one of the most historic and respected programs in HBCU basketball,” said Dixon. “This is a program with deep tradition and great potential. I’m excited to build on that legacy, connect with our alumni, and get to work with a group of young men who are striving for excellence.”

As an alum of Johnson C. Smith University, Dixon’s collegiate coaching career spans 24 years, with previous stops in South Carolina, East Carolina, South Florida, Winthrop, and North Carolina.

His first season at South Carolina State in 2004 yielded the team’s most recent MEAC regular season championship prior to this past year.

He has helped guide three teams to the NCAA tournament, including a North Carolina State team that won the ACC tournament and reached the Final Four in 2024.

“We are thrilled to welcome Coach Dixon to the Morehouse family,” said Morehouse College Athletic Director Harold Ellis. “Larry is a championship coach, having coached on all collegiate levels, and he brings a wealth of experience, a proven commitment to student-athlete development, and a fresh perspective that aligns with our mission to achieve excellence both on and off the court.”

Coach Dixon takes over a Morehouse team that finished the 2024-2025 season with a 17-13 overall record and a 14-7 record against the SIAC.

The Maroon Tigers have not finished a season with a record below .500 since 2011-2012.
