The Michael Vick era officially kicked off at William “Dick” Price Stadium on Saturday as Norfolk State University hosted its highly anticipated annual spring football game.
Fans packed the stands for their first glimpse of Vick on the sidelines as head coach, ushering in a new chapter for the Spartans and drawing a crowd that included 757 sports legends.
NBA icon Allen Iverson, NFL quarterback Tyrod Taylor, and WBO lightweight boxing champion Keyshawn Davis were among the notable attendees. They joined Virginia Sen. Aaron Rouse and congressman Bobby Scott to support Vick’s debut.
The presence of these stars electrified the atmosphere and underscored the significance of the day for both the university and the Hampton Roads community.
“It was good to see,” Vick said after the game. “Those guys have been telling me they are going to come out and support, and I expect to see that all season. It’s good to have the local hometown heroes come out. Guys who our players can look at as role models, great citizens of the Hampton Roads and just good people.”

The Spartans showcased their progress through a series of position drills, seven-on-seven matchups, one-on-one showdowns, and full team live periods. William & Mary transfer Dresean Kendrick wowed the crowd with a spectacular one-handed touchdown grab from quarterback Israel Carter, marking the first score of the afternoon.
All-MEAC running back Kevon King followed with another touchdown near the goal line, while Kam’Ryn Thomas made a highlight-reel catch across the middle for a big gain.

Norfolk State’s defense also impressed, with Delaware State transfer Khaleef Jimmison breaking up a pass in the end zone and helping set a gritty, competitive tone. “We just wanted to compete,” Jimmison said. “Compete, compete, compete. Be physical, intentional, detailed, and just compete”.
Allen Iverson, speaking from the field, summed up the day’s spirit: “It’s a beautiful feeling just to be out here and see all the people out here. Just embracing Mike [Vick] and what he’s trying to do with Norfolk State. Just, I’m here. This is my thing. I want to be a part of this. I want to have a lot to do with this.”
