From all accounts, the Florida A&M defense — though it’s spring — might be back.
The unit was all over the field and made its presence known during Saturday’s Green and Orange scrimmage at Bragg Memorial Stadium.
“We’re a lot better on the defensive front than we may have been last year,” second-year head coach James Colzie told the Tallahassee Democrat about a group that recorded several sacks and created turnovers.
Colzie is hoping the small sample size can be a harbinger of things to come for a defense that uncharacteristically underperformed in 2024.
Last season, the defense struggled at every level. The Rattlers ranked seventh overall, allowing 27.2 points per game and 167 yards per game on the ground. FAMU was last in the SWAC in forced fumbles and 10th in the conference in interceptions.

Colzie mentioned that East Carolina transfer Daylyn Diston has made an impact in the secondary. The coach also noted that linebacker Nay’Ron Jenkins and defensive back Chase Lloyd also stood out.
So, is the Dark Cloud Defense back?
“I don’t want to get too high, but I don’t want to get too low with our football team,” said Colzie. “But I was excited with what I saw. Offensively, defensively, and our special teams did a good job today.”
