One of the unexpected heroes of the 2024 HBCU national championship season for Jackson State is moving on.
Junior quarterback Zy McDonald, who came off the bench to help lead JSU to a win over Southern in the SWAC Championship Game earlier this month, is entering the NCAA transfer portal.

In relief, McDonald, a dual-threat quarterback from Ridgeland, Mississippi, went 6 of 11 for 80 yards and 1 touchdown and 1 interception. He also gained 94 yards on 13.4 yards per carry and a 23-yard TD run in the Tigers 41-13 win against the Jaguars on Dec. 7.
McDonald, who threw for 381 total yards, 5 TDs, and 1 interception over two seasons at Jackson State after transferring from FBS Louisiana, was a highly touted Mississippi prep football star at Ridgeland High School.
McDonald is the nephew of former New Orleans Saints Pro Bowl running back Deuce McAllister.
