Virginia Union University’s football team tied a 108-year-old record in a 91-0 win over Bluefield State on Saturday.
The outcome also equaled the largest margin of victory in school history, tying the 1916 team’s 91-0 win over Saint Paul’s College.
VUU also set a record for most offensive yards by racking up 687 yards in total offense while also setting a new record for the most interception return yards with 166 (breaking the record of 119 set against Virginia State University in 1973).
Virginia Union’s Jaehlan Jordan returned an interception 58 yards for a touchdown, while William Davis tied the second-longest interception return in school history by returning a pick for 98 yards for another score (James Porter returned an interception 101 yards for a TD against Virginia State in 1973 while Mike Brim returned an interception 98 yards against Elizabeth City State in 1986).
The Panthers scored a school-record 41 points in the second quarter alone.
The win also propelled Virginia Union into first place in the CIAA. The Panthers are now 6-0 in the CIAA.
“We certainly didn’t try to run up the score,” said VUU Head Football Coach Dr. Alvin Parker. “But everybody earned the right to play today, and everybody got the reps they earned. When the guys got in the game, they produced. I’ve been saying all year that we have so many guys who can play, so when they get the opportunity, I want them to take advantage of it.”
VUU’s Mark Wright completed 11 of 15 passes for 347 yards and four touchdowns, while quarterback RJ Rosales completed five of six passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns.
Virginia Union’s Reginald Vick, Jr., caught six passes for 192 yards and three touchdowns, while teammate Mykey Anderson caught two passes for 113 yards.
