Mississippi Valley State has lost nine consecutive games to begin the season and 14 straight dating back to 2023.
But the Delta Devils’ latest defeat might have been its most crushing yet.
After pulling within 17-16 late in the fourth quarter on a Cameron Nelson 24-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Ty’Jarian Williams, Kendrick Wade Jr. went for a two-point try that appeared to be a success when Williams scored, but the play was nullified by a holding penalty.
The Delta Devils attempted what would have been the game-tying extra point, but holder Nicholas Stephens mishandled the snap.
Here’s how it all went down:
The loss was the latest in which MVSU was either ahead or within one score in the fourth quarter that Delta Devils could not come out on top. With three games remaining in the regular season — two against SWAC East contenders in Alabama State and Jackson State — MVSU could go winless in 2024.
