Former Coppin State track & field athlete Joseph Amoah has been chosen to be the captain and flagbearer for Ghana at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics on Friday.

“I would like to say thank you to the team for selecting me as captain and flagbearer of the Opening Ceremony,” said Amoah. “It makes me feel honored and distinguished to have this type of opportunity. I feel like it’s another milestone in my career. Not a lot of people even get the chance to compete in the Olympics so being able to compete and getting selected as flagbearer is mindblowing.”

The flagbearer is one of the most distinguished honors an athlete can receive at the Olympics. He or she leads his or her country as they walk out on the opening day of the competition.

Amoah competed for Coppin State from 2017-2021, notably winning the MEAC Outdoor title in the 100m in 2018 and the Indoor title in the 200m in 2020.

He also competed in the Outdoor National Championships three times, making it to the finals of the 100m and 200m in 2019.

This will be Amoah’s second Olympics career Olympics, representing Ghana, having run in the 200m and 4×100 in the 2020 Summer Olympics.

This time around, the former Coppin State athlete will run as part of Ghana’s men’s 4×100 relay team.
