New Grambling State football coach Mickey Joseph is a veteran at various levels of college football, so he’s used to answering questions of all kinds.
So when he was asked during Tuesday’s SWAC Football Media Day event if GSU was a stepping-stone program for him to return to FBS-level coaching, Joseph had a quick and simple response.
“I would tell those people to mind their business because they don’t know what happened,” Joseph told KNOE 8 News’ Megan Murray. “I could’ve went to another Power 5, but to say I’m using this as a stepping stone? No.”
“To say I’m using it as a stepping stone to get back to the Power 5? No.”

Joseph, a Louisiana native who played quarterback at Nebraska, has had several coaching jobs within the SWAC, serving as wide receivers coach at Alabama State, as well as wide receiver and special teams coach at Alcorn State and Grambling. Joseph also was the head coach at NAIA Langston, where he went 13-7 in two seasons.
Joseph says the Grambling job, which came open when former NFL coach Hue Jackson’s contract was not renewed, was an easy decision for him to make.
“This was the only FCS job I would’ve taken,” Joseph said. “When Grambling became open, it was a no-brainer to come back.”
The Tigers, picked to finish third in the SWAC’s Western Division, open their season on Saturday, Aug. 31, at Louisiana-Lafayette.
