One month after a press release that flew under the radar announcing a search for a new women’s basketball coach, Maryland-Eastern Shore announced the hire of Malikah Willis as the Hawks’ new leader on Friday afternoon.
She replaces Fred Batchelor, who is out after 19 seasons at UMES. Batchelor led Maryland-Eastern Shore to a 15-15 record this past season, including an 8-6 mark in the MEAC before a quarterfinal loss in the conference tournament.
Willis has 23 years of experience across various programs as an assistant coach, including stints at Norfolk State, Elizabeth City State, Cheyney and Chicago State. Willis, a former all-Big Ten standout at Iowa, is considered a great recruiter, with five of her recruits eventually drafted into the WNBA.
UMES coaching search flew under radar
The announcement of a coaching search last month failed to mention any details behind Batchelor’s departure, with Athletic Director Tara Owens saying, “We have officially begun a national search for our next head women’s basketball coach. During the hiring process, our selection committee intends to move swiftly and with great analysis in order to identify the right person to lead Hawk women’s basketball.
“We are looking for a leader with a focus on the well-being and success of our student-athletes. Our goal remains steadfast in positioning our student-athletes to be successful in the community, classroom, and in competition.”
Batchelor was 235-328 in 19 seasons in Princess Anne.
