Edward Joyner, Jr.’s era as Hampton University’s head basketball coach has concluded after 15 years, the university confirmed Monday.

The announcement followed the Pirates’ departure from the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Championships with an 80-50 loss to Delaware on Saturday.

Hampton ended the season with a 9-24 overall and a 3-15 conference record, landing at the bottom of the CAA.

Joyner, the winningest coach in the school’s Division I history with a 223-257 record, leaves a legacy of dedication and achievement.

“Edward Joyner, Jr. has been a pillar of commitment and leadership for our basketball program,” Athletic Director Anthony D. Henderson Sr. stated. “However, the recent lack of sustained success has led us to pursue a new direction for our team.”

Under Joyner, the Pirates notched several high points, including seven postseason runs and three trips to the NCAA Tournament in 2011, 2015, and 2016. His tenure also saw the team in the NIT, CBI, and CIT, with a notable NCAA Tournament win over Manhattan in 2015. Joyner’s teams also captured two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular-season titles and three MEAC tournament titles.

This season, despite struggles, featured victories that included a notable win against Elon in the CAA Championships, showcasing Joyner’s unique achievement of winning a conference tournament game in every Division I conference Hampton has competed in.

The shift from the MEAC to the Big South and CAA posed additional hurdles during Joyner’s time.

“Coach Joyner’s commitment to our student-athletes development has been invaluable,” Henderson added. “We thank him for his service and wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

The school will immediately begin a national search for its next head basketball coach.
