When the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference basketball tournament begins next week, the host Norfolk State Spartans will have a decided home-court advantage as both men’s and women’s basketball teams earned the No. 1 seed in their respective brackets.
The Spartan women finished MEAC play 13-1, their best mark since joining the league over 25 years ago, and will begin their quest for a second straight MEAC tournament title against No. 8 South Carolina State at noon.
Howard (10-4), North Carolina Central (9-5) and Coppin State (8-6) round out the top four seeds. Coppin State won a tiebreaker with Maryland-Eastern Shore (also 8-6) for the fourth seed, while Delaware State (4-10), Morgan State (3-11), and South Carolina State (2-12) round out the women’s seedings.

The Norfolk State men look to regain the tournament title they lost to Howard 69-65 last season. The Spartans finished MEAC play with an 11-3 record (20-10 overall) and will face No. 8 Coppin State. North Carolina Central (9-5) won a multi-team tiebreaker against South Carolina State and Howard for the No. 2 seed. The Eagles will face No. 7 Coppin State.

Surprising South Carolina State earned the No. 3 seed and will square off against No. 6 Delaware State while defending tournament champion Howard secures the No. 4 seed and a first-round match-up with No. 5 Morgan State.
The MEAC tournament begins Wednesday, Mar. 13, at the Scope in Norfolk.
