The Bluefield State football program has announced they have hired former Florida A&M assistant coach Davon Morgan as their next head coach.

Asked about his thoughts about the challenges and opportunities of his new position as head coach of the Big Blue football program, Morgan said: “The question isn’t “Why Bluefield State?’ It’s ‘Why not Bluefield State?’  I see an opportunity to revive a program that wants to thrive on and off the field.”

Before starting a career in coaching, Morgan was a standout football player at Virginia Tech, being selected to the All-ACC Second Team in 2010.

He played two years in the NFL on the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles before moving on to play for several indoor football teams.

The former All-ACC selection started his coaching career at the Virginia University of Lynchburg as the team’s special teams coordinator and co-defensive coordinator.

He then moved on to the Virginia State coaching staff in 2015, serving as the defensive backs coach for two seasons.

Following stops at Alderson Broaddus, Emory & Henry, and Elizabeth City State, Morgan made his way to Florida A&M, marking his first Division I coaching opportunity.

He has spent the last two seasons with Florida A&M as the team’s defensive pass game coordinator and the Safeties coach.

Under his direction, Florida A&M had the number one pass defense in the SWAC and the seventh-ranked pass defense in the country in 2023.

In addition, the Rattlers tied for the fourth-most interceptions forced in the country (17), returning three for touchdowns.

Morgan comes to a Bluefield State team entering its fourth season since its football program was restored after a 40-year hiatus.

Their former head football coach, Tony Coaxum, left the team after three seasons to accept the special teams coach position with The Citadel.

In their first season as an official member of the CIAA this past year, the Bluefield State Big Blue finished with a 1-9 overall record, including a 0-8 conference record.
