Matthew Slater spent 16 seasons filling various roles for the New England Patriots. He won three Super Bowl championship rings in the process and now will take on a new role: life after football.
Slater, the son of Pro Football Hall of Fame offensive tackle and Jackson State alumnus Jackie Slater, announced his retirement Tuesday morning in a statement released by the Patriots on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The younger Slater himself did not attend an HBCU, but when the Patriots drafted Isaiah Bolden in the 2023 draft, Slater was happy to see the rise in awareness of HBCU football.
“If you ask my parents, they wouldn’t be who they are without [Jackson State],” Slater said last summer during Patriots training camp. “We have so many family and friends that have been there and to other HBCUs. They’re an important part of history, and they’re great to celebrate.”
