Fisk University senior power forward Maya Buckhanon has been a driving force behind what is shaping up to be another winning season under second-year coach Victoria Crawford.
The Talladega, Alabama native is averaging 24.7 points and an NAIA-leading 14.9 rebounds per contest. She had been in a bit of a scoring slump before exploding in her most recent outing.
In the Bulldogs’ 87-70 win over Southern University New Orleans on Saturday, the NAIA All-American dropped 60 points on an efficient 24 of 38 from the floor and 12 of 16 from the foul line while also grabbing 19 rebounds.
The 60-point outburst set a school record for both men’s and women’s hoops and was the most points scored in the NAIA since 1988 when Claflin’s Miriam Walker scored 62 against Dillard University on March 19, 1988.
Buckhanon’s 60-point was the most prolific individual scoring effort of any NAIA player in the 21st century.
