Former Alabama State offensive lineman Tytus Howard agreed on a 3-year, $56 million extension with the Houston Texans.
The deal also includes a guaranteed $36.5 million, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.
At Alabama State, Howard transformed himself from a walk-on tight end to an All-SWAC First Team offensive tackle. Howard was drafted 23rd overall in the first round by the Texans in the 2019 NFL Draft.
Howard played 488 snaps in his rookie campaign, only allowing two sacks. He was on the field for 811 snaps in 2020, and once again only gave up two sacks.
This past season at right tackles and right guard, Howard allowed three sacks and only five quarterback hits. He was graded as a 67.9 by Pro Football Focus, which was the highest such ranking of his career.
Earlier this year, Howard was also named the NFLPA’s Black College Pro Player of the Year for an active NFL player “who serves as a positive influence in his community, has ties to his HBCU alma mater, exhibits good character and has performed at a high level during the most recent NFL season.”
