Coming off what was a breakout season in 2022, the Texas Southern Tigers are ready to take their game to the next level in 2023.
The Tigers finished with a 5-6 overall record and a 4-4 record in conference. The team fell one win short of their first winning season since 2000.
According to Tigers linebacker Jacob Williams, the turning point of the team’s season last year was their 24-0 shutout win against Southern.
“Once we did what we did to get a shutout against Southern, I feel like that just gave us a lot of momentum going through the season,” said Williams. “I just feel like we [were] one of the top defenses in the SWAC, and that just gave us a big confidence booster.”
When speaking about what’s next for Texas Southern, quarterback Andrew Body said, “Just expect a lot of plays” from the team overall.
The Tigers’ quarterback was also asked about being selected to the SWAC’s preseason second team and if he believes he is the best quarterback in the conference.
“I can show you better than I can tell you,” said Body. “The SWAC said I’m second team. I’ll just say I’m [going to] show y’all. Accolades come with the game, so if you do what you got to do week in and week out, there ain’t no way you shouldn’t reach your goals. So y’all will see at the end of the season.”
Williams assured that his team “would be in Atlanta for sure” and that they would “bring some hardware.”
Texas Southern begins their pursuit of a championship on Sept. 2 when they face division rival Prairie View A&M in the Labor Day Classic.
