The Alabama State Hornets are on the verge of losing their starting running back as Jacory Merritt has announced he is entering the transfer portal.
Merritt has been with the Hornets since 2019, serving as the team’s backup running back in his first two seasons behind All-SWAC selection Ezra Gray.
In nine total games as a backup, he compiled 272 rushing yards on 88 attempts and four touchdowns.

The Hornets’ back finally got his chance to be a starter in 2022, finishing the season with 467 rushing yards and four touchdowns to go along with 167 receiving yards on 13 receptions.
Merritt is the second major member of Alabama State’s offense to enter the transfer portal this offseason after quarterback Myles Crawley transferred to Grambling State.
