Noah Bodden, the No. 1 quarterback recruit in New York made headlines when he decided against conventional logic in September to commit to Grambling State instead of the litany of Power 5 schools that desired his services.
But Bodden, telling the New York Times recently, that he didn’t care all that much about the lure of football factories. The decision rested solely on ideological pursuits.
“I want to be a trendsetter,” Bodden said. “I want to be like LeBron James and bring everybody with me.”

In the offseason, the 17-year-old has worked with former NFL quarterbacks Phil and Matt Simms, and they’ve raved about Bodden’s potential.
“I’ll tell him from time to time during a workout, ‘Just so you know, that throw was good enough to be the sixth or seventh best throw in the NFL this week,’” Simms told The Times. “It’s scary to think about how good he can get, because he can already throw the ball 50 yards, 20 feet off the ground.”
Bodden could make his decision official on National Signing Day this week.
“I’m trying to promote a positive vibe,” Bodden said. “Imagine if a whole bunch of other recruits go to HBCUs, too. If you are good, they are going to come join you.”
