And we thought FMU was the only HBCU playing fall sports. Not true. Coahoma CC is in the mix

For weeks it was believed that Florida Memorial, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, was the only HBCU athletic program competing in fall sports until the school announced Friday that it was bringing all fall sports to a halt.

However, it turns out that Coahoma Community College — one of only a handful of two-year historically Black community colleges located in Clarksdale, Mississippi — just completed the second game of a six-game football schedule.

A member of the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges (MACCC) — formally the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) — the Tigers (1-1) began the season on Oct. 1 with a 37-23 win over Itawamba Community College before losing to Thursday to Northeast Mississippi Community College 13-10.

As witnessed with sports organizations worldwide, CCC is also experiencing its share of COVID-19 challenges.

On Wednesday, the school announced the cancellation of its Oct. 24 homecoming game against Mississippi Delta Community College.

“Due to these unfortunate circumstances, it was decided to cancel our Homecoming game against Mississippi Delta Community College,” said Reggy Hankerson in a statement. “MDCC informed us of COVID concerns and that they would not be participating in the game. I agree with that decision and think this is the best move for both institutions.”

With the cancelation, the Tigers’ next scheduled game is Oct. 29 at Northwest Mississippi Community College.
