Willie Simmons will be taking the vacant Florida A&M head coaching job, Prairie View confirmed Saturday.
“We want to thank Coach Simmons and his family for their contributions to Prairie View A&M University,” said Vice President and Director of Athletics Ashley Robinson in statement. “He led Panther football through an exciting period with the opening of our new football stadium and helped Prairie View A&M to again become a contender in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. We wish him success in his future endeavors.”
Prairie View assistant head coach Bubba McDowell has been named interim head coach.
Simmons, who was offered the job by FAMU this week, is set to replace Alex Wood, who resigned last month after three seasons.
Before FAMU eventually hired Wood, Simmons was one of eight candidates for the position following a successful stint as offensive coordinator at Alcorn State, where he orchestrated one of the top offenses in the FCS and helped the Braves win the Black National Championship in 2014.
