Winston-Salem State’s playoff run ends in Atlantic Region finals loss to West Chester

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — The West Chester Golden Rams proved to be too much for the WSSU Rams on Monday afternoon, and took home the Atlantic Region Championship and trip to Grand Prairie, Texas and the DII College World Series, with a 12-7 win over WSSU.

West Chester jumped on WSSU pitching early and scored two quick runs in the first inning to lead 2-0.

WSSU answered with a double from Brandon Ford, scoring John Garcia and Ivan Acuna singled to center, scoring Ford to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the first.

West Chester took the lead back in the third with a sac fly rbi from Nick Bateman.

The Golden Rams of West Chester broke the game open in the fourth with a four run inning to take control, 7-2.

WSSU fought back in the sixth with a solo home run off the bat of Brandon Ford and a three-run blast from Randal Ortiz to cut the lead to 7-6.

The WSSU Rams tied the game in the bottom of the seventh when Landon Steiner doubled to left, allowing Ivan Acuna to score.

But a five-run eighth from West Chester proved too much for WSSU as the Golden Rams went out in front, 12-7.

WSSU could not get another run around to score and would fall, 12-7 in the Atlantic Region Final.

Ivan Acuna went three for five with a run scored and a run batted in and Landon Steiner went three for four with a run scored and a run batted in, and Randal Ortiz went one for four with a run scored and three runs batted in. Brandon Ford went two for five with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Randy Norris went one for four, and John Garcia went one for five with a run scored. Emilio Abreau went one for five with a run scored.

Garrison Roy took the loss for WSSU, as he was one of five pitchers who took the mound for WSSU. Jordan Carlton started for the Rams and went 4.2 inning, allowing 10 hits and seven runs while striking out four. Landon Biggs pitched 1.2 innings, striking out three. Corbin Easter threw an inning giving up four hits and four runs and James Martin threw the final inning.
