Chowan Wins Third Straight Game with Win over Johnson C. Smith

MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University football team rolled to their third straight win on Saturday evening with a 47-14 victory over Johnson C. Smith University. The Hawks post a 4-1 record on the season and stand 2-0 in CIAA play with the win while the Golden Bulls fall to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in league play. Chowan improves to 2-1 in the series against Johnson C. Smith.

The Hawks rolled up a season-high 650 offensive yards in the win while holding the Golden Bulls to 251 offensive yards over the course of the contest. Tyree Lee tallied 24 carries for 191 yards while scoring two touchdowns. Randall Dixon completed 26-34 pass attempts; connecting with four different receivers for 381 yards and five touchdowns for Chowan. Ryan Nolan notched 11 receptions for 77 yards with Kaine Lombard hauling in four receptions for 54 yards and one touchdown and Tyrone Carter grabbing three receptions for 147 yards and one score. Reginald Williams notched three receptions for two touchdowns.

Defensively, Demetrius Newberry paced the Hawks with eight tackles (five solo, three assisted) and two sacks. Antwuan Hicks collected seven tackles (three solo, four assisted) for the Chowan Blue and White.

Harold Herbin completed 14-34 pass attempts for 140 yards and one touchdown in the loss. Tromecio Summers tallied four carries for a team-high 51 yards while Eugene Holmes hauled in five receptions for 73 yards.

Desmond Taylor led all players in the contest with 13 tackles (six solo, seven assisted). Carlo Thomas followed with nine tackles (five solo, four assisted) on the evening.

With 32 seconds on the clock in the first quarter, Dixon’s one-yard pass to Williams put the Hawks on the board and capped a 15 play, 89-yard drive. Christopher Donovan made good on the point after attempt to give Chowan a 7-0 lead.

At the start of the second quarter, an interception by Hicks led to a six play, 36- yard touchdown drive for the Hawks. Kaine Lombard hauled in a 26-yard pass from Dixon to give Chowan a 13-0 lead, and Donovan’s point after attempt left the Golden Bulls trailing 14-0 with 11:53 remaining before halftime.

After taking a 14-0 lead into the halftime break, the Hawks came out firing on all cylinders in the third quarter. With 8:32 on the clock, Dixon connected with Torry Baker on a 29-yard pass, concluding a ten-play, 91-yard drive. Donovan’s point after attempt gave Chowan a 21-0 advantage. The Hawks scored twice more before the end of the third quarter; using a 20-yard touchdown run by Lee and Dixon’s 68-yard pass to Carter to take a commanding 33-0 lead.

Johnson C. Smith responded just before the end of the third quarter, concluding a 12 play, 73-yard drive with Herbin’s two-yard touchdown run to end the scoring drought. Matias Lambrecht’s point after attempt was good, but the Golden Bulls still trailed 33-7 heading into the final quarter.

With 10:53 remaining in the contest, a one-yard run by Lee and point after by Donovan pushed Chowan ahead 40-7. Johnson C. Smith responded with a score at the 8:21 mark after Rathel Carter hauled in a 13-yard touchdown pass from Herbin. Lambrecht’s point after attempt was successful. The Hawks put the exclamation mark on the evening with a final touchdown drive with 5:48 left to play. Dixon tossed a one-yard pass to Williams and Donovan made good on the point after attempt to secure the 47-14 win for the Hawks.

Chowan returns to Garrison Stadium next Saturday as the Hawks play host to Bowie State University. Kick-off for the CIAA Northern Division contest is slated for 3:00pm. Saturday’s game marks the second contest of a three-game homestand for the Hawks and is also Chowan’s Homecoming Game.
