Miles and Tuskegee, both members of the SIAC Western Division, have been the lone representatives from the division in the five-year-old conference championship game. In four of those seasons, the winner of the game between the two schools has determined who would play for the league title. In 2015, the Golden Bears erased an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to earn a 26-23 win en route to the SIAC championship.

This season, both teams are off to strong starts. The Golden Bears are 2-1 after a 31-7 victory over Morehouse. The Golden Tigers are 4-0 overall, 1-0 in Western Division play after a 38-7 win over Lane. Tuskegee is currently ranked No. 12 in the American Football Coaches Association Division II poll and both schools have been among the top-ranked teams in several Black College football polls this season.

This game will mark the first time the two teams have met in the Legion Field since the 2009 Labor Day Golden Classic, where the Golden Bears erased a 16-point deficit to earn a 23-16 win and end the Golden Tigers’ 17-game conference win streak.
