HUNTSVILLE — Juaquin Davis electrified the Louis Crews Stadium crowd before they settled in Saturday night with his game-opening 93-yard kickoff return.
But the Bulldogs couldn’t hold off the high-powered Southern University offense and fell to the Jaguars in a 59-31 shootout.
After Davis’ game-opening TD sprint, the Jags scored four unanswered touchdowns for a 28-7 midway through the second quarter. Southern finished with 258 yards rushing and 280 yards passing.
Then De’Angelo Ballard connected with Jonathan Dorsey on a 39-yard touchdown to cut the Southern lead in half. Dorsey brought down the pass with a Southern University defensive back draped over him. But the Jags scored with 54 seconds left in the half to take a 35-14 lead into the intermission.
Southern (2-2 overall, 2-0 SWAC) opened the second half with a 58-yard TD catch by Willie Quinn for a 42-14 lead.
However, Jordan Bentley scored on a two-yard touchdown run and a Nick Carden 22-yard field goal cut the Southern lead to 42-24 with 2:39 left in the third quarter.
The Jags added two more scores before Byran Brower ran six yards for a touchdown and a 56-31 score with 8:07 to play in the game.
For the Bulldogs, Bentley had 66 yards rushing on 10 carries and Ballard had 17 carries for 58 yards as the Bulldogs rushed for 192 yards. Ballard also was 18 of 29 passing for 252 yards and 2 interceptions.
The Bulldogs will travel to Houston to take on Texas Southern next Saturday.
