Below are summaries of what coaches said during Monday’s (Sept. 12) SWAC football coaches teleconference.

0:00 – James Spady (Alabama A&M) – Was pleased with team’s performance against MVSU despite weather delays. Thinks Prairie View is a really good team. Said the team is really fast. Will not dismiss the fact that PV played Texas A&M last week just because it is a Power 5 school. Thinks the tape against TAMU will still provide good material for planning. Spoke about former AAMU DL standout Anthony Lanier making the roster for the Washington Redskins. Said he is not surprised Lanier made the roster.

10:08 – Jenkins (Alabama State) – Took a moment to congratulate North Carolina A&T and head coach Rod Broadway for winning their game Saturday against FBS opponent Kent State. Also, took a moment to take “hats off” to Grambling State for the team’s performance against Arizona despite a 10-point loss. Made sure to point out that HBCU coaches could indeed coach against FBS schools. Stated Alcorn State showed why they are defending SWAC Champs in Saturday’s loss and made no excuses it. Hopes that his team will be able to play with more “detail” in upcoming game against Southern University. He took some responsibility for team’s lost as coach against Alcorn State. Was pleased to have Kourtney Berry return back to play Saturday.

20:34 –  Fred McNair (Alcorn State) – Said team needs to do a better job in preventing penalties. Also talked about the 3 fumbles his team lost in Saturday’s game against Alabama State. Discussed concerns in trying to get some of his “nicked-up” players ready for the short week in Thursday’s game against UAPB.

29:35 – Monte Coleman (Arkansas-Pine Bluff) – Was very disappointed in letting team’s game against Oklahoma Panhandle State “slip away” in a 20-16 loss. Is pleased with the fact that his team has reduced the number of turnovers so far this season. Said the challenge in preparing for Thursday night’s game against Alcorn State is the quick turnaround, but said team will be ready to play. Despite the 0-2 this season, Coleman said he is pleased with the growth of the team.

38:52 – Broderick Fobbs (Grambling) – Said the trip to Arizona was a good one for his team. Stated the team played well and was focused in the first half, but turnovers made the difference in team’s loss. Said he will not count the game as a loss for this team, but rather as a learning experience. He wanted to play Devante Kincade again after his first half injury, but didn’t think it was worth bringing him back in possibly making the injury worse. Made no excuses for the loss. Said his team just didn’t play well enough to win the game. Said Kincade suffered a strained hamstring. Commented that all of the coaches in the SWAC can coach at any level. Said he is proud to be one of the coaches in the conference.

51:00 – Tony Hughes (Jackson State) – Was disappointed in losing halftime lead to Tennessee State in 40-26 loss. Was proud in how resilient his team was in not giving up. Thinks Grambling is the most talented team in the conference. Said his team will have its hands full in playing GSU this Saturday. Said his team didn’t run the ball as well as he would have like against Tennesee State. Stated he is focused on trying to change the culture of the team and program. Said “one of these weeks this team is going to put it all together.” Stated GSU’s offense is very explosive. Said “they drive you crazy” when referring to Grambling’s scheme.

59:45 – Rick Comegy (MVSU) – Said Alabama A&M played “good, solid” football. Stated his team needs to do a better job of tackling, but sees improvement in his team overall. He thinks his team is getting better. Talked about pulling QB Austin Bray out of the game for a while. Said Bray was too concerned about throwing the deep ball when there were opportunities to run out of the pocket to gain yards.

1:11:20 – Willie Simmons (PVAMU) – Said his team went into a “hostile environment” in playing a top 20 FBS team in Texas A&M. Is proud that his guys didn’t quit despite the score and was proud of the team’s effort. Stated the team’s game against Alabama A&M will be a “dogfight”. Commented on the QB play of Trey Green. Despite playing TAMU, Simmons said Green still missed some reads he shouldn’t have during the course of the game. Said the team could have done a better job of executing despite playing before 95,000 people. Simmons said has no concerns about the team’s long trip to Alabama. The team will fly out Friday morning.

1:20:11 – Dawson Odums (SU) – Said Tulane is a very good football team. Commented about how difficult it was to play against the triple option offense that Tulane ran. Said his team is a little “beat up” but that it should not prevent him from relying on his “go to guys” in planning Saturday against Alabama State. Stated that his team needs to “taste victory” this Saturday now that the team is 0-2. Wants to focus on improving the running game throughout the season and is looking forward to playing at home and on new field turf. Says he expects Alabama State to play hard and be “mentally tough”.

1:30:14 – Michael Haywood (TSU) – Called the loss to Houston Baptist Saturday “disappointing”. Said upcoming game against Mississippi Valley State presents some challenges. Stated MVSU doesn’t do anything exotic, but is different as it relates to special teams. Was not pleased with the play of his offensive line in last Saturday’s game.
