With Jay Hopson leaving Alcorn State to accept the head coaching position at Southern Miss, Footballscoope.com reported that there was a “strong possibility” Hopson would bring Prairie View A&M head coach Willie Simmons with him to join the USM staff.
Simmons, who led the Panthers to an 9-2 season in 2015 as a first year head coach, put that report to rest when he announced Thursday that he was staying at PV.
“As of today, I’m Prairie View A&M’s head football coach,” Simmons said in an interview with OBN Radio. “(I’m) excited to be here, glad to be here and looking forward to continuing to press forward and finish what we’ve started.”
Before arriving at Prairie View, Simmons was the offensive coordinator at Alcorn State under Hopson for three seasons (2012-2014). Simmons did confirm that he was offered the offensive coordinator position at USM by Hopson.
