Alcorn State, Tennessee State, Tuskegee Rank No. 1 In Various HBCU Football Polls

Hartly, DE – The second full week of HBCU football action finds the Braves of Alcorn State taking over the top FCS position while Tuskegee’s Golden Tigers solidify their ranking on top of the DivisionII/NAIA HSRN Football Polls.

In the Division I FCS poll, Alcorn State bounced back from a season opening loss to Georgia Tech to knock off SWAC East rival Alabama State, 31-14, in Montgomery to jump over North Carolina A&T and South Carolina State into the top position. Tennessee State climbed into second place following its Southern Heritage Classic win over Jackson State. N.C. A&T, Bethune-Cookman and S.C. State round out the FCS top five.

In Division II, Tuskegee remained on top of a group whose rankings remained relatively steady from week 1. The Golden Tigers knocked off Albany State, 27-14 in the White Water Classic to improve to 2-0 on the season. Four CIAA teams, Virginia Union, Virginia State, Elizabeth City State and Livingstone ) complete the top five among Division II and NAIA competitors.

BOXTOROW Polls

Three of the top five teams from last week fell in the BOXTOROW coaches poll, while three of the top five teams in the BOXTOROW media poll won, causing shakeups in both polls.

In the coaches poll, defending champion Alcorn State defeated Alabama State 35-18 and climbed back into the top spot.  The Braves received eight of the 18 first-place votes.

North Carolina A&T fell out of the top spot after falling to FBS opponent UNC and dropped to No. 2, in a tie with Tennessee State who is now 2-0 on the season after defeating Jackson State 35-18 in the Southern Heritage Classic in Memphis.

The Tigers received four first place votes to N.C. A&T’s three.

Bethune-Cookman received two first-place votes and South Carolina State received one, with both schools rounding out the top five at No. 4 and No.5, respectively.

Meanwhile in the media poll, Tennessee State and N.C. A&T received seven first-place votes a piece, but the Tigers finished in the top spot, 13 points ahead of the second place Aggies.  South Carolina State dropped one spot to No. 3 this week, while Alcorn State moved up a spot to No.4 and Tuskegee, who is off to a 2-0 start, rounds out the top five.

The BOXTOROW HBCU FCS coaches and media polls are administered by FROM THE PRESS BOX TO PRESS ROW.  The coaches poll is voted on by the HBCU Football Championship Subdivision coaches and the media poll is voted on by media members around the country who cover HBCU football.
