New Orleans – The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference office announced today the GCAC Volleyball Players of the Week for the first full week of the 2015 season. Carolyne Edwards of Tougaloo was voted the Attacker of the Week, Xavier’s Darian Harris was picked as Defender of the Week and teammate Franziska Pirkl was slected as conference Setter of the Week.
GCAC Attacker of the Week: Carolyne Edwards, Tougaloo (FR, OH, Southaven, Miss.)
Carolyne Edwards led Tougaloo to three wins at the Edward Waters 2015 Fall Volleyball Classic this past weekend, giving the Lady Bulldogs their best start in program history at 3-1. She averaged 2.81 kills and 3.25 digs per set with a .227 hitting percentage over the four contests. Edwards picked up 14 kills and 19 digs in her collegiate and conference debut against host Edward Waters in a five-set victory. She posted double figure kills and digs in her first three matches (Edward Waters, Concordia-Selma, Florida Memorial). This is the first time she has been selected Attacker of the Week.
GCAC Defender of the Week: Darian Harris, Xavier (SR, L/DS, Gretna, La.)
Darrian Harris picked up where she left off last season, when she led Xavier’s GCAC championship team in digs. Harris reached double figures in digs in all four matches of the season-opening Big Easy Blastoff and twice tallied 19 digs. She helped Xavier rank 10th in the NAIA in digs per set through Saturday’s reported matches. Harris averaged 5 digs per set over 13 sets played.
GCAC Setter of the Week: Franziska Pirkl, Xavier (SR, S, Munich, Germany)
Franziska Pirkl produced her career-high for assists in a 3-set match when she record 42 Saturday in a victory over Faulker. Led all players at the Big Easy Blastoff by averaging 11.2 assists per set. Had 37 assists and 16 digs against Mobile and nearly missed a double-double with 36 assists and 9 digs against 19th ranked Wayland Baptist.
