Southern University has been voted No.1 in final HBCU Sports FCS fan poll of the 2014 football season.
The Jaguars (8-3), in the No.1 spot for the first time this season, received 16 first-place votes and 229 points. Southern will play its season finale Saturday against Grambling (7-4), who placed at No. 2 in the poll, in the annual Bayou Classic in New Orleans.
Saturday’s rivalry game between the Jaguars and Tigers has become a playoff game of sorts. The game’s winner will earn a spot as the SWAC West representative in the SWAC Championship Game in Houston, Dec. 6, against Alcorn State.
Bethune-Cookman (9-3) earned the No. 3 spot in the poll, followed by Alcorn State (9-3), North Carolina A&T (9-3), South Carolina State (8-4), Morgan State (7-5), North Carolina Central (7-5), Alabama State (7-5) and Hampton (3-9).
The HBCU Sports Fan Poll was conducted weekly during the course of the regular season to give fans an opportunity to vote for their top 10 HBCU teams at the FCS and Division II levels.
