A controversial call leads to Howard defeating Norfolk State

The MEAC announced that 21 student-athletes will be suspended from their season opening football game for the 2015 season resulting from an altercation during the Norfolk State at South Carolina State game Nov. 22, in Orangeburg, S.C.

The altercation, which was investigated by the conference office, concluded that eleven 11 student-athletes from Norfolk State and ten 10 from South Carolina State violated the NCAA’s Football Rule 2, Section 32 as well as the MEAC’s Constitution and Bylaws in regards to fighting.

“While we understand that during competition emotions can be elevated, we expect all of our student-athletes to demonstrate good sportsmanship at all times. It is regrettable that these student athletes did not refrain from the altercation during this game,” said MEAC Commissioner Dennis Thomas.

Because the penalty for the violation for the MEAC supersedes that of the NCAA, in this instance, each student-athlete involved in the altercation will sit out the next game. As the altercation happened during the final game of the season, the penalty will be enforced for the first game of the 2015 football season.

Senior student-athletes, that have exhausted their collegiate eligibility, will not be penalized based on the ruling.
