NORFOLK, Va. – North Carolina Central quarterback Malcolm Bell was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. Javon Hargrave of South Carolina State was named Defensive Player of the Week.
Hampton’s Jerrell Antoine earned Rookie of the Week honors while NCCU’s Carl Jones and SCSU’s Antonio Hamilton were named Offensive Lineman and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively.
Bell (QB, 6-1, 190, r-So., Richmond, Va.) accounted for five touchdowns and 359 total offensive yards as he led the Eagles to a 42-14 victory over Savannah State. Bell completed 23 of 32 passes for 287 yards with three TDs passing. He also rushed 18 times for 72 yards with two TDs on the ground.
Hargrave (DL, 6-2, 300, Jr., Salisbury, N.C.) collected 11 solo tackles in the Bulldogs’ 20-14 win over No. 14 Bethune-Cookman. He recorded six sacks in the game, tying a FCS and MEAC record, and forced two fumbles to halt the defending co-champion Wildcats.
Antoine (QB, 6-1, 160, Fr., Orlando, Fla.) finished the day connecting on 13-of-25 passes with 143 yards and one touchdown in the Pirates win over Delaware State. He connected on a 56-yard pass for a TD in Hampton’s first conference win of the season.
Jones (C, 6-1, 285, r-So., Nashville, Tenn.) graded out at 93-percent of his blocking assignments as he led the Eagles offense with 498 yards of total offense against Savannah State. He collected four pancake blocks and allowed no penalties or sacks in the team’s victory.
Hamilton (DB, 6-0, 185, r-Jr., Johnson, S.C.) recorded a 91-yard punt return for a touchdown in the Bulldogs’ win over Bethune-Cookman.
