The Alcorn State men’s basketball program made a splash by receiving a commitment from arguably the best high school player in the state of Louisiana.
Richwood High School star Reginal Johnson Jr. of Monroe, La., declared his intention to play for Alcorn State next season.
Johnson, Louisiana’s Mr. Basketball, averaged 35 points and 15 rebounds during his senior season.
The 6-foot-4 inch swingman received scholarship offers from LSU, Louisiana Tech, Northwestern State and the University of Louisiana-Monroe.
“We wanted to fill three spots. We wanted a point guard, a big and a utility guy like Reginal,” Alcorn coach head Luther Riley said. “And I think he has the body makeup, he has the toughness and mentality.”
Johnson said it was the environment that sold him on Alcorn.
“We all thought it was the best decision because it felt like home,” Johnson said. “The people were nice and the coaches are great.”
