Ernest T. Jones, a UConn assistant coach and former Alcorn State head coach, resigned this week after controversy stemming from religious comments he made during a newspaper interview.
Jones joined the UConn staff as running backs coach under new head coach Bob Diaco in January.
In an interview with the Hartford Courant, Jones said “we’re going to make sure [players] understand that Jesus Christ should be in the center of our huddle, that that’s something that is important.”
“Ernest has resigned his position effective immediately here at the university after deep introspection and reflection,” coach Bob Diaco said.
Jones played wide receiver at Alcorn State in the 1990s and was named the school’s head coach in 2008 compiling a 2-10 record in his lone season there.
