“The room erupted in loud applause,” is what Ross Dellenger of the Clarion-Ledger reported when it was learned that Melvin Spears had just been fired by Alcorn State as the school’s head football coach Friday.

Spears had been on administrative leave since December 2011.

Alcorn State president Christopher Brown also announced the hiring of Patric “Pop” Simon as the school’s athletic director.   Simon joins Alcorn after serving in the position at Langston University since 2008.

Todd McDaniel has been named as the schools interim head football coach.  According to Brown, a national search team will be launched to find a replacement for Spears.
