LORMAN – Alia Frank dropped 21 points on Alcorn State on Saturday, but it wasn’t enough to keep Mississippi Valley State from suffering its first loss since Jan. 21. The Devilettes fell for the first time in the last six games despite shooting nearly 50 percent from the field. MVSU hit 18-of-37 shots (48.6 percent) and converted 21 of 34 free throws. Kiara Ruffin was one of two Lady Braves to score in double-figures with 15 points. Tiffany Stewart chipped in 14 for Alcorn.
Southern (10-9, 9-3) 62, Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-23, 0-12) 48
BATON ROUGE – Southern fought off a determined Arkansas-Pine Bluff team desperate for its first win to pull back into a tie for first place in the SWAC standings. UAPB only trailed 25-22 at halftime but gave out of steam in the second half. Kendra Coleman had 11 points to lead Southern. Laneisha Stephens dropped in 10 points and eight rebounds, while Jamie Floyd finished with nine points and 13 rebounds.
Alabama A&M (12-10, 7-5) 63, Alabama State (9-12, 6-6) 51
HUNTSVILLE – Whiquitta Tobar popped for 27 points and seven rebounds to lead Alabama A&N to a over rival Alabama State. Tobar was 8-for-19 from the field with a 3-pointer and 10-for-12 from the freethrow line. Shundray Davis added 10 points, while Alyssa Strickland contributed nine points and grabbed six rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs. Alabama State didn’t have a player in double-digits. Three players, Taila Arrington, Ashley Jones and Danielle Gazaway each finished with eight points. Arrington also had six rebounds.
Grambling (11-11, 7-5) 51, Texas Southern (4-18, 2-9) 50
HOUSTON – Markisha Patterson’s jumper with four seconds left lifted Grambling to a dramatic come-from-behind win over Texas Southern. The win was the Lady Tigers’ third straight and fourth in five games. GSU trailed 32-23 at halftime. The Lady Tigers chopped the deficit down to a point with 3:05 left at 50-49. Both teams went scoreless until Patterson’s game-winner. Wymeka Randle scored 15 points to lead GSU, while Tonieshwa Mack had 12 rebounds. Gianne Fleming paced TSU with 14 points and Ginnesica Lawler finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.
Prairie View (9-13, 6-5) 56, Jackson State (9-12, 6-6) 55
PRAIRIE VIEW – Prairie View nearly let a big lead slip away, but held on for a heartstopping win over Jackson State. The Lady Panthers led 35-24 at halftime, but the lead had dwindled to 53-48 with less than three minutes left. A layup by Dominique Brothern brought JSU to with a point at 56-55 with three seconds left. JSU had one more chance after a missed PVAM freethrow. However, Rachel Jones’ 3-pointer was off target as time expired. Kiara Etienne led PVAM with 18 points. She was 7-for-15, including 4-for-9 from 3-point range. Jeannette Jackson added 17 points, Latia Williams tallied 12 points and Larissa Scott grabbed 10 rebounds to go with six points. Tiffany Kellum had double-double to lead Jackson State. She led all scorers with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Rachel Jones followed with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Kiana McCarty also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
