HATTIESBURG, MS – Mississippi Valley State breezed through Southern 16-5 in five innings to capture its sixth straight SWAC Softball Championship title.
After a scoreless first inning, the Devilettes exploded in the second with eight runs off of eight hits. Both Ta’Niya Wallace and Tiana Parks tripled in the inning while Angelia Jones ripped a homer, her second of the tournament.
Mississippi Valley put up two more runs in the third, highlighted by an Ashley Hobbs single and Rashundra Brass double to command a 10-0 lead.
In the fourth, the Devilettes rattled off another three hits while scoring five runs to stretch their lead to 15-0.
The Jaguars finally answered in the bottom of the fourth as Aruba Nicholas and Chastoni hit singles bringing home runners. Kesha Tauriac also scored an unearned run in the inning.
The Devilettes would score one more run in the fifth before sending Southern into the bottom of the fifth with a 13 point deficit. Despite scoring two runs in the inning, the Jaguars final two batters, Tauriac and Nicholas, struck out to end the game at 16-5.
Rashundra Brass led the Devilettes in the game with three hits and four RBI’s. Angelia Jones, who recorded two home runs in the tournament, was voted the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
