Alabama A&M soccer standout Futhi Bhembe has been selected as the 57th overall pick in the Major League Soccer (MLS) 2009 SuperDraft by Real Salt Lake. The pick comes in the fourth round for the Bulldog senior who scored 14 goals in 16 contests in 2008 as A&M compiled a 9-5-3 record. He ranked fifth in the NCAA Division I in points per game at 1.94, while he finished tied for 10th in the nation with those 14 goals.
Real Salt Lake general manager Garth Lagerwey said, “Futhi was the fifth leading goal scorer in Division I this season. He’s a quick attacking player that got things done at the collegiate level, so we’re anxious to see if that can translate to the pros.”
Alabama A&M head coach Salah Yousif echoed Lagerwey’s evaluation lauding Bhembe’s quickness and nose for the ball in scoring situations.
